Gahan appoints Grundy to the bicentennial commission

Board votes on use of funds, proposals for 2013 celebration

NEW ALBANY — Mayor Jeff Gahan has appointed Yvonne Grundy to an unfilled seat on the New Albany Bicentennial Commission.

Grundy is a retired public school teacher, organist and member of the finance committee for Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church and winner of the Southern Indiana Woman of the Year award in 2011.

Among her other appointments, Grundy serves on the board of directors for Friends of Division Street School, Community Action of Southern Indiana and Floyd County Head Start.

“Yvonne Grundy is the epitome of public service,” Gahan said in a news release.  “She pours her heart into every endeavor she tackles, and I am confident that she will be a great asset to the bicentennial commission.”

The commission is charged with creating, organizing and managing events associated with New Albany’s 2013 bicentennial. The bicentennial committee assists the commission in its duties, but its members do not vote on proposals.

The commission has received a funding commitment from the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County, and on initial readings Monday, the New Albany City Council agreed to appropriate $85,000 for bicentennial events.
