New Albany traffic stop leads to heroin arrest

Clarksville man was also wanted on two warrants

NEW ALBANY — A Clarksville man wanted on outstanding warrants in two Indiana counties was arrested in New Albany early Thursday and now faces multiple felony drug charges.

Joseph D. Powers, 41, was arrested around 12:30 a.m. after a car in which he was a passenger was pulled over by Indiana State Trooper Patrick Stinson for a traffic violation, according to a release from ISP. Stinson reported that after pulling over a 2003 silver Mitsubishi at the corner of Spring and Silver streets, Powers identified himself to police as 24-year-old Joe Smith. Officers, however, recognized Powers appeared to be much older than 24 years old.

Upon further investigation, Stinson reported Powers’ real identity was revealed — along with the information that Powers was wanted on outstanding warrants in Harrison and Floyd counties. During the arrest process, ISP reports officers found what they believed to be heroin in Powers’ possession.

He was taken into custody and is being held at the Floyd County Jail. He was preliminarily charged with dealing heroin, a class C felony; possession of heroin, a class D felony; and false informing, a class A misdemeanor.

In addition, Powers has an outstanding warrant in Floyd County for battery, [two counts], and an outstanding warrant in Harrison County for operating while intoxicated.

The New Albany Police Department assisted during this investigation.
