EVERYONE LOVES A PARADE: Charlestown delights in holiday celebrations

Christmas attractions include new train, ice rink

JEFFERSONVILLE — Charlestown is already brightly lit for the holidays, but that doesn’t mean its list of celebrations is about to end.

On Saturday, Charlestown will host its second annual Christmas Parade.

Parks Director Rhonda Davidson said about 20 participants have signed up to be a part of the parade, which is about the same amount of those who participated last year, and the city is still accepting applications for those who would like to join in the fun.

“Our goal is to bring families together and create family memories,” Davidson said as to why the city brought the parade back for its second year.

She added that last year the streets were lined with people, and she expects more of the same for Saturday’s event.

The parade is expected to leave Charlestown High School at 6 p.m., head down Park Street to Market Street, to the city square before going to High Street and heading back to the high school.

Surrounding the parade will be a host of holiday events, including decorating contests, an ice skating rink at the Charlestown Family Activities Complex and train and carriage rides.

Both the train, the Charlestown Express, and a synthetic ice skating rink are new features that have been added to the city’s celebrations.

“We’ve had great turnouts for the ice skating [and] we built our own [train],” Davidson said. “It was actually made from an airport tug.”

She said the express can carry up to 35 people from the Charlestown Family Activities Park past the city’s holiday displays. Davidson added the city will continue to use the train year-round for city events.

The city has also set the cost of all of the events — ice skating, train and carriage rides — at $5.

Davidson said that way a family of four can come to the city and do everything in one night and it will cost them $60, which she said is pretty reasonable when compared to other attractions in the region.

In addition to Charlestown’s light display in the city square, two other attractions with contests for which has the most holiday spirit.

A new Adopt-a-Lot section of Market Street, between Clark Street and Greenway Park, features local businesses and civic groups that have decorated their areas with Christmas displays, according to the city’s website.

City residents can visit the city’s website and vote for their favorite display until Sunday.

Judging will also take place for a contest hosted by Charlestown’s Beautification Committee.

Charlestown Clerk-Treasurer Donna Coomer, and beautification committee co-chair, said all entries for the home decorating contest must be submitted by 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13. The houses will be judged after Sunday, Dec. 15.

A form to enter the contest is also available on the city’s website and a winner will be chosen from each of the city’s four council districts.
