New Albany City Council hopefuls debate at IUS

NEW ALBANY — The Indiana University Southeast Democrats hosted a debate Friday night with New Albany City Council hopefuls running in the May 3 primary.

The nine candidates who participated included: Doug England, Shirley Baird,

Roger Baylor, John Gonder and Brad Bell, all at-large candidates;

Bob Caesar, District 2; Greg Phipps, District 3; Randy Smith, District 5 and Suellen Wilkinson, District 6.

None of the candidates running in District 1, Vicki Denhart, Theresa Timberlake or incumbent Dan Coffey participated. Two other incumbents who face challengers in the primary, Steve Price in District 3 and Diana McCartin-Benedetti in District 5 also were absent.

The candidates touched on several topics during the debate which lasted 90 minutes. Each candidate had one minute to answer a question and each provided a closing statement.

IUS Democrats faculty adviser Jim St. Clair said he extended an invitation to all of the city council candidates.
