KIPDA’s transportation planning update continues

Funding added to help clean and paint Clark Memorial Bridge

LOUISVILLE — Work continued at the Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency meeting Thursday to update the region’s long-range transportation plan.

KIPDA Transportation Planner David Burton said a working group has been put together to help determine the transportation issues that exist in 41 districts, across the five county planning region, which includes Clark and Floyd counties in Indiana.

The working group consists of Louisville Public Works, Indiana Department of Transportation — Seymour District, Clarksville, Jeffersonville, Transit Authority of River City and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet --District 5, among others.

Burton provided a brief update to the issues report, which will be included into the long-range transportation plan designed to resolve transportation issues in the region. He said the issues report will likely be available by January 2013.

“We’re not just talking about site specific issues ... we’re also trying to identify what is the landscape, what is happening in our area, what kind of trends are we seeing,” he said.

Once a draft report is put together, Burton said there will be another public input session to let the public view the proposal.

TIP CHANGES

KIPDA Transportation Planner Mary Lou Hauber presented a list of modifications to the Transportation Improvement Plan.

Among the changes were the addition to TARC’s bus fleet of five electric commuter buses that will replace five Toonerville trolleys. The funding for the buses comes from TARC’s Capital Improvement Program along with federal dollars.

Changes also were made to a project to clean and paint Clark Memorial Bridge. Federal bridge construction funds totaling $1.5 million were added to the project to paint the spans and steel below the bridge deck from the main truss and the railings to the Indiana side of the river.
