Eight seniors named as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists

Most local districts represented

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Three of the four school districts in Clark and Floyd counties have students who are semifinalists for the 2014 National Merit Scholarship program.

About 16,000 students nationwide have been named as semifinalists for $35 million in scholarships, which the program will award next spring. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to become finalists with half of those winning a scholarship.

Less than 1 percent of high school students nationally become semifinalists. To become a finalist, students must maintain an “outstanding academic record” according to a press release, participate in school and community activities, a detailed scholarship application and other details to move on to the next step in the process.

The winners of the scholarship will be announced in four news releases beginning in April.
