A Florida man is in custody after he and another suspect allegedly attempted to use forged credit cards to purchase merchandise at Bass Pro Shops in Clarksville Saturday.
Juan Moreira, 52, Hialeah, Fla., faces charges of forgery, a class C felony; fraud, a class D felony; and theft, a class D felony.
Moreira and another adult suspect were at Bass Pro Shops Saturday, and aroused the suspicions of store employees when they attempted to make a purchase. Both men attempted to flee prior to the arrival of the police, and a “younger individual” was able to leave in a dark green Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck, according to the arrest report. Meanwhile, Moreira was detained by mall security on Bass Pro Shops’ property.
When a police officer arrived, he found five credit cards in Moreira’s possession, of which three were issued to a “Juan Ordoqui,” according to the report. The other two were in Moreira’s name. The officer asked Moreira where his friend went, but Moreira claimed he had come to the store alone and used a bus to get there, the report states. Moreira had a Toyota key in his possession.
The store manager informed the police officer that Moreira and his companion had been captured on video making purchases several weeks prior to the incident Saturday, according to the report.
The officer contacted his superior, who then contacted a Secret Service agent. The agent arrived on the scene, determined that the three credit cards in Juan Ordoqui’s name were forged and read Moreira his rights, the officer wrote.
When pressed, Moreira claimed he had found the cards in Miami and had attempted to use them to purchase merchandise at Bass Pro Shops, and submitted a written statement to that effect. Moreira also had a hotel key card in his possession for a Marriott Hotel in Louisville, according to the report. The Secret Service agent asked Moreira for permission to search the hotel room.
“At first he stated yes, then stated no and became uncooperative,” the report states.
Moreira was then taken to the Michael L. Becher Adult Correctional Complex. Moreira’s status at the jail could not be confirmed by press time.
