Former chief hired as Clarksville bailiff

Ingle served 20 years as town’s police head

CLARKSVILLE — Dwight Ingle may not be the top cop in Clarksville anymore, but the town’s former police chief is back to duty as the town court’s bailiff.

Responding to a post on the local website, Clarksville Town Court Judge Mickey Weber justified the decision to hire Ingle after a member of the message board accused Weber of making an improper hire.

“I met and interviewed each person that submitted a written application,” Weber wrote. “I was impressed by every applicant that I interviewed.

“Ultimately, I hired Dwight Ingle. It had nothing to do with political favors. He was the applicant with the most law-enforcement experience and with the most extensive training in the area of nonlethal force.”

The bailiff position is a part-time position, and health insurance is not a part of the compensation plan, Weber said. The bailiff’s duties include transporting prisoners to and from jail, taking prisoners into custody and maintaining order in the courtroom. The bailiff works 6 to 10 hours per week on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, Weber said.

A call to Ingle seeking comment was not returned.

Ingle served as the town’s chief of police for 20 years. He was not retained as the chief after the town elected four new members to the Clarksville Town Council.

He is not currently employed by CPD, but is drawing a pension from the department.
