Police: Man fired shots into homes, sped from officers in New Albany

Robert D. Browning held on $150,00 bond

NEW ALBANY — A Memphis man was seen firing a handgun from a pickup truck while in New Albany Thursday, according to witness statements made to police.

Robert D. Browning, 44, is believed to have driven drunk through New Albany firing a gun, led police on high-speed pursuit and wrestling with officers as he was taken into custody.

New Albany Police Major Keith Whitlow said NAPD officers responded to the area of Locust and Beeler streets after a call was made about 6:40 p.m. of a man driving intoxicated.

After reaching the area, police located the red pick up truck driven by Browning.

The officer activated the patrol car’s emergency lights, but Browning failed to stop.

Whitlow said the officer pursued the vehicle for several blocks as Browning reached speeds high enough to send the pick up truck airborne over railroad tracks. During the pursuit, he is also accused of striking an unoccupied vehicle.

Browning brought the vehicle to a stop at Beeler and Vincennes streets, Whitlow said, at which time it took three officers to take him into custody.

A pistol was located in the front seat of the vehicle during the traffic stop, and a total of three bullet holes were later found in two different houses along Beeler Street.

Browning has been charged in Floyd County Superior Court No. 1 with two counts class C felony criminal recklessness; class D felony resisting law enforcement; class A misdemeanor operating a vehicle while intoxicated; class B misdemeanor failure to stop after accident resulting in damage to an unattended vehicle; and class C misdemeanor operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Browning is being held under a $150,000 court-cash bond.

The court scheduled Browning’s initial hearing for Monday.
