YMCA annual Zumbathon raises money for fundraiser

NEW ALBANY —

On April 13, about 11 kids and 75 adults joined together at the Floyd County Branch of the YMCA of Southern Indiana to dance for a cause at the Y’s Third Annual Zumbathon. The five Zumba and Zumbatomic instructors: Audra Skibo, Kate Hughes, Kristie Winchell, Mandi Hutchins and Sharon Watkins, took the stage and got the party started by leading a Derby themed Zumbathon for the Y’s Annual Giving Campaign.

The annual campaign provides those in the community the opportunity to attend the Y and its programs, regardless of their ability to pay. Last year, the Y gave out more than $500,000 in financial assistance for programs and services that touched more than 8,200 individuals and families.

The Zumbathon started off at 11:15 a.m. with 30 minutes of Zumbatomic for ages 4-13. With around 11 kids attending, they were dancing and winning prizes. At noon, the gym was filled with plenty of Derby pride and eager dancers as the adult portion of the event began. Each instructor took the stage with a variety of styles, and in between, there was a derby hat contest and door prizes given out to participants.

Dena Pollard was a first time participant at this year’s Zumbathon.

“You feel like you are on a dance team and living out your childhood dream of being a dancer,” Pollard said. “It’s fun, and I could have kept dancing after the hour and a half event.”

The YMCA of Southern Indiana’s Zumbathon raised $572 for a deserving cause that touches so many in the area.

“I love Zumba and have to do everything Zumba at the Y,” said Barbara Nance. “The fact that you are helping people out makes it even better to do Zumba – we are here to help out our community.” Rhonda Rinker agreed that “it felt good to raise money and do something fun at the same time.”
