Bus rider charged in theft

I-65 corridor man’s preferred grounds for shoplifting, ISP reports

MEMPHIS — A Gary man believed to travel on busses up and down Interstate 65 committing thefts during scheduled stops was arrested Friday morning by Indiana State Police.

Troopers responded to Love’s Truck Stop in Memphis about 8 a.m. in reference to an alleged theft at the travel plaza, ISP reported. Upon their arrival, troopers spoke with travel plaza employees and Joshua Cloyd, 21, from Gary.

“Joshua Cloyd had allegedly stole women’s socks and cupcakes from the travel plaza,” ISP released in a report.

During their investigation, troopers recognized Cloyd as a man arrested April 7 for the alleged theft of items at the Pilot Travel Plaza, also located in Memphis.

After further discussion with Cloyd, “ ... it was determined that Cloyd would get on a travel coach/bus in Northern Indiana and travel the Interstate 65 corridor south on the bus. When the bus made stops for refueling, eating meals,  he would get off of the bus and allegedly steal items,” ISP reported.

Cloyd is believed to reach his predetermined destinations going south, then get off of the bus traveling south and then get onto another bus traveling north, ISP reported.

“He would then use the same alleged method of stealing on the way back north to his home in Gary.”

Cloyd was arrested and preliminarily charged with two counts theft, a class D felony.

Clark County court records have not been updated with Cloyd’s upcoming court hearings for his April 7 or Friday arrests as of press time.
