Lorch to run for Superior Court Judge

Local lawyer currently serves as council attorney

New Albany City Council Attorney Matthew Lorch is seeking to be the next judge of Floyd County Superior Court No. 2.

Lorch — who operates a private practice in addition to serving as council attorney — is seeking the seat currently held by Judge Glenn Hancock.

“I see an opportunity to continue developing my interest in the law at a higher level,” Lorch, a Democrat, stated in a news release.

“I want to make this important local court the best it can be for the citizens of Floyd County.”

Lorch, 34, has been an attorney for about a decade and practices in Kentucky and Indiana. His grandfather, Basil “Bud” Lorch Jr. was an Indiana State Representative, and his father, Basil Lorch III, is the federal bankruptcy judge for the Southern District of Indiana.

“I am influenced by my family’s tradition of service,” Lorch said. “Their examples are the beacons that lead me forward.”

Lorch is married with two children, and his family resides in New Albany. He is serving his fourth year as council attorney.

Councilman John Gonder is serving as Lorch’s campaign committee chairman.

Lorch’s “candidacy for Judge of Floyd County Superior Court No. 2 is good news for Floyd County because it signals interest and involvement of a new generation of leaders for us,” Gonder said in a news release.

A phone message left for Hancock Friday hadn’t been returned as of press time.

The primary will be held a year from today on May 6, 2014. The general election will be held on Nov. 4, 2014.
