Five times four: Five Floyd County schools get Four Star designation; one in Clark County gets nod

FLOYDS KNOBS —

The New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corp. didn’t get just one gold star from the Indiana Department of Education — they got 20.

Five schools in the district were designated Four Star Schools. Floyds Knobs Elementary, Greenville Elementary, Georgetown Elementary, Highland Hills Middle and Floyd Central High Schools all got the recognition. In Clark County, Utica Elementary School in Greater Clark County Schools, was the lone designated a Four Star School.

Schools must score in the top 25th percentile in the state on either ISTEP+ or the combined scores of their English 10 and Algebra 1 End of Course Assessments to earn the honor.

Bruce Hibbard, superintendent, credited much of the success to the building staff at each school.

“I am so proud of our students, teachers, support personnel and leadership teams,” Hibbard said. “This is the most Four Star designations NAFCS has ever earned.”

Janie Whaley, principal at Floyd Central, said some of the districtwide curriculum practices have helped increase collaboration throughout the schools. She said that helped her school reach the Four Star recognition.

“I really believe the entire district focus on doing the common formative assessments and doing those on an ongoing basis throughout the school year has given us a focus on what’s going to be tested and what’s important,” Whaley said. “We really sharpened that focus.”

Greenville Elementary and Floyds Knobs elementaries both earned the Four Star designation two years in a row, as well as Highland Hills Middle School.

Whaley said she’s glad her staff was on the list this year around and hopes to make it a consistent recognition.

“We’re just really pleased to be on that list,” Whaley said. “A lot of hard work was done by our teachers, I just have to hand it to that staff for picking up the challenge.”
