Amazon in Jeffersonville offering free tours to public

JEFFERSONVILLE — What comes between placing an order on Amazon.com and receiving a package at your doorstep is a mystery to most.

Amazon is about to let buyers in on the behind-the-scenes operations of their distribution centers, including the one at River Ridge Commerce Center in Jeffersonville.

Starting May 6, anyone can sign up for free one hour tours of the facility. Tours will be offered every first and third Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Amazon spokeswoman Nina Lindsey said that each tour is led by staff from the local fulfillment facility and has a maximum of 30 people per tour.

“It’s a very comprehensive tour, so they’ll be able to see everything that happens after they click ‘buy,’” Lindsey said. “So they’re going to get a really good perspective.”

She said the tours are in response to customer curiosity, but she wouldn’t say exactly what people will learn on tours.

“I think the best thing is for folks to come see it for themselves,” Lindsey said.

Jeffersonville’s facility is one of what Amazon calls "fulfillment" centers across the country offering tours. Other cities on the list are Middletown, Delaware, Chester, Virginia, Chattanooga, Tennessee, Phoenix and San Bernardino, California.

Lindsey said Amazon will offer these tours indefinitely. Those interested in learning more or signing up for a tour can go to amazon.com/fctours.
