Father, pastor talk about deaths of mom, kids

Mom, son and daughter were found dead last week

NEW ALBANY — The husband and father of a woman and two kids found dead in a creek in Binford Park last week is speaking about his loss.

Michael Clutter, who lived with his family at an apartment complex about a mile from the park, told newsgathering partner WLKY-TV that he and his family had only visited the park once, shortly after moving to New Albany from Washington state in December.

“My wife loved her kids very much and she loved me,” Clutter told WLKY. “We just had the best life together.”

Police say 10-year-old Brandon Clutter and 6-month-old daughter Katelyn Clutter drowned in the creek. The cause of death has not been released for 35-year-old Jamie Clutter, pending toxicology reports.

“Sometimes I’m really emotional and all I can do is cry,” said Michael Clutter. “I wish somehow I would’ve stayed home that day to try and prevent this,” said Clutter.

Clutter told WLKY he left for work about 4:45 a.m. Wednesday after his son had crawled into his bed. He gave the boy a hug and told him he loved him.

“And then my wife followed me to the door so she could lock the door, and then I gave her a hug and kissed her and told her I loved her and then she told me she loved me,” said Clutter. “There was nothing that was out of the ordinary at all.”

Clutter said when he returned home, the apartment was empty, which he said was not normal.

“It was unusual for them to not be home. I knew something was wrong,” said Clutter.

He called his wife’s friends then drove to the police station, WLKY-TV reported. He stopped to talk to police at Binford Park and learned they had found a woman and two kids dead.
