News and Tribune takes third straight top award

Newspaper of the Year, two individual honors won by staff

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — The News and Tribune was named Newspaper of the Year for the third consecutive year in the Best of CNHI journalism competition for 2012.

The newspaper — with offices in Jeffersonville and New Albany — competed in the small daily newspaper category and was honored for comprehensive coverage of the devastating tornadoes which struck Southern Indiana. Individually honored in the small newspaper division category were Christopher Fryer, who was named Photographer of the Year in his first year at the newspaper, and Editor Shea Van Hoy, who was named editorial writer of the year for the third time in the past four years.

The News and Tribune received praise from a team of CNHI judges for “breadth of coverage, strong photography and initiative” in everyday news and sports coverage, but especially in the aftermath of the EF-4 tornado that destroyed homes, businesses and schools in Henryville, Marysville, Otisco, Pekin, Borden and surrounding areas, according to a CNHI news release.

“During the March 2012 tornadoes, I watched as our reporters, photographers and designers did some incredible work documenting a horrific time in this area’s history,” said News and Tribune Publisher Bill Hanson. “They went about their business as professionals. What really struck me that first night, though, was how everyone did their work with such compassion for the people in those towns that were most affected.”

Hanson, who has worked in newspapers for 29 years and in five states, added, “The residents of Clark and Floyd counties are served by some of the best and brightest writers, photographers and designers anywhere in the country. I’m so happy for the hard-working men and women in our newsroom.”

The News and Tribune won Newspaper of the Year in 2011 and The Evening News — which merged with The Tribune — won the same award in 2010.

Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. serves more than 130 communities in 23 states. The annual Best of CNHI recognizes the individual and collective works of the company’s journalists.
