Howard Steamboat festival changes name to Art and Antique Jubilee

JEFFERSONVILLE — What was once known as the Victorian Chautauqua — an annual spring festival run by the Howard Steamboat Museum — is catching up with the times as it changes its name to the Art and Antique Jubilee after 21 years.

“The name seemed to not ring a bell with anybody,” said Roger Fisher, chair of the jubilee and a member of the board of directors. “We’re moving things a little more forward. It’s a refreshing.”

The jubilee, which will be May 24 and 25 at the steamboat museum, will be free for guests and for vendors selling artwork and antiques. Fisher said the festival will have room for 80 vendors as well as music at the Pilothouse by Jamey Aebersold and tours of the mansion for a small admission fee.

The Howard Steamboat Museum, 1101 E Market St., is housed in a 22-room mansion owned by the Howard family in the late 1800s that ran the nation’s largest inland shipyard of its time. The festival will be on the museum’s expansive grounds.

“It’s a bit of a fundraiser, but mostly it’s to use the campus and the museum as a celebration of this home that’s been there over 120 years,” Fisher said. “A lot of people aren’t aware of the museum because they don’t have a reason to go. We like to have other reasons for people to come and see this place that’s still there after all those years.”

The jubilee will run Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Vendors who would like to reserve a spot can contact Fisher at 812-282-883 by March 31.
