Clarksville auto theft results in arrest of man, 72

Louisville resident charged in selling vehicle found in Clarksville parking lot

CLARKSVILLE — A 72-year-old Louisville man was charged with auto theft Friday in a Clark County court.

Before being charged with the class D felony, Donald Edward Warren admitted to Clarksville police Tuesday that he was involved in selling a “large box van” that was towed weeks earlier from the parking lot of a Clarksville business.

The vehicle’s owner reported the van stolen Feb. 19 from the parking lot of Clarion Hotel on Marriott Drive near Derby Dinner Playhouse. The man told police the van had brake problems and that it had been parked in the lot for nearly a month.

Clarksville investigators accessed an online law enforcement database and found the vehicle had been processed at an area scrap yard, which eventually led them to contacting Warren.

More than a month later, on Tuesday, Warren was interviewed at CPD headquarters.

He told police the owner of the hotel had contacted him about towing away the van, since his son owns a towing company, and that he earns extra income buying and selling vehicles.

The vehicle was too large for his son’s company to tow, so Warren contacted another man to remove the vehicle, and after he had, he sold the same man the van for $1,000, according to the police report.

Police found no culpability in the actions of the man who towed or purchased the vehicle.

Warren, however, told police “he had no legal right to sell the vehicle,” before he was placed into handcuffs and taken to jail, according to the police report.

Warren spent nearly one hour in the facility before a $500 bond payment was made for his release.

A pretrial conference has been scheduled for April 17 in Clark County Circuit Court No. 3.
