Program to focus on Taylor High School

In celebration of Black History Month, Jeffersonville native Flora Clipper will give a presentation at the Jeffersonville Township Public Library, 211 E. Court Ave., Jeffersonville, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 27. She will discuss the history of Taylor High School, which was located 821 Wall St.

A 1940 graduate of Taylor High School, Clipper also attended Claysburg School and the Lane School in Watson. An exhibit featuring artifacts from Taylor High School will also be on display during Black History Month. Taylor High School operated as a segregated school from 1891-1952. Downtown churches sponsor series  

The downtown churches of Jeffersonville are using their annual Lenten preaching series and luncheon on the Wednesdays of Lent to address the needs of the community and opportunities for individuals, congregations and their ecumenical ministry network to help.

The series will kick off on Wednesday, Feb. 29, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at East Market and Walnut streets in Jeffersonville, with the Rev. Gilbert Hubbard of  Wall Street United Methodist Church offering the first reflection.

The downtown churches, according to the Rev. Don Summerfield, pastor of First Presbyterian Church and the senior pastor in the downtown alliance, is an ecumenical network of congregations who support one another in ministry in downtown Jeffersonville and who gather several times a year for join worship and service.

The service, which begins each Wednesday at 12:05 p.m., at St. Paul’s, is followed by a luncheon at the church. The cost of lunch is $7 and the proceeds from the lunch will be donated to the Center For Lay Ministries. All are welcome and invited to join us for the service and the conversation over lunch that follows. For more information call 812 282-1108.


Deadline for NAHS hall of fame nears

The New Albany High School Hall of Fame committee will soon meet to begin the selection process for the class of 2012. The deadline submit someone’s name for consideration is Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Forms may be obtained from New Albany High School, 1020 Vincennes St., New Albany. Return nominations to the school in care of the Hall of Fame Committee.
