6 P.M. UPDATE: Winter storm warning issued for area

Another punch could come Sunday

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — A winter storm warning has been issued for Clark, Floyd and surrounding counties for late Thursday through Saturday morning by the National Weather Service.

An arctic cold front expected to move through the area Thursday “will bring a complex and messy period of weather with significant accumulations of snow, sleet and freezing rain possible, dependent on location,” the NWS said in a statement on its website.

Rain is expected to change to frozen precipitation in Southern Indiana between midnight and dawn Friday morning, and then move south.

The NWS warns of the possibility of “treacherous driving conditions” Friday and Friday night. Isolated power outages are possible because of freezing rain, particularly in Western Kentucky.

The NWS says the most significant snow accumulations will take place in Southern Indiana.

Kevin Harned, chief meteorologist with WAVE 3 News, is forecasting 4 to 7 inches of snow and some sleet accumulation between Indianapolis and Interstate 64, and between 1 to 3 inches of snow, ice and sleet between I-64 and the parkways in Kentucky.

Harned reported that on Sunday, precipitation will move back up from the south. While temperatures just above the surface will warm to support plain rain, cold surface temperature will result in freezing rain. He said one-quarter to one-half inches of ice are possible, and if that happens, there could be isolated power outages and hazardous driving and walking conditions.
