Sew successful: Sew Fitting in New Albany sees milestone

Business celebrates five years in business with open house

NEW ALBANY — Half of a spare bedroom inside her Clarksville home was the space Cisa Barry used to launch Sew Fitting five years ago.

Since then, the business has been on the rise growing both in size and volume. On Saturday, Sew Fitting will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. to celebrate its five year anniversary.

“It’s going to be a great time, and we’d love for people to stop by and hang out,” Barry said.

When she started Sew Fitting, Barry said she had no intentions of expanding the business into a normal commercial building or shop.

“Now who knows how I ever worked at home,” she said.

In January of 2011, Sew Fitting opened off Pearl Street near the Elm Street intersection, but the business wouldn’t stay there for long.

Just a few months later, Sew Fitting moved inside the revitalized White House Centre at 222 Pearl St. The business has added more space since moving to the White House Centre, and Sew Fitting’s staff now includes two full-time employees and one part-time worker as well as Barry.

Now with a larger staff, Sew Fitting has been able to focus more on custom orders in addition to alterations.

Sew Fitting also features vintage inspired designs, wedding dresses and men’s tailoring services.

Barry taught a sewing class in Jeffersonville recently, and said she would like for Sew Fitting to be able to offer sewing classes at some point.

Barry plans to apply for a grant to help fund the purchase of sewing machines, and said she would like to start a series of traveling classes as well.

Middle and high school students simply aren’t taught basic sewing anymore, but it’s a useful and enjoyable craft to learn, she said.

“We’ve got this whole generation that doesn’t even know how to thread a needle,” Barry said.

Barry certainly knows a thing or two about sewing, but she isn’t resting on her accomplishments. She has been active in the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals, and she recently attended a week long conference held by the organization in Nashville.

Beyond adding sewing lessons, Barry has plans to grow Sew Fitting in other realms. For example she would like to launch a fabric store associated with the business.

Barry said she hopes to discuss Sew Fitting’s five-year business plan with customers during Saturday’s open house.

There will be music and refreshments served during the event. For more information, call 502-548-8733.
