New Albany PD outlines its plans for Harvest Homecoming

NEW ALBANY — The 2012 Harvest Homecoming Festival’s downtown food and craft booths open at noon Thursday and will continue through 5 p.m. Sunday.

The New Albany Police Department has passed along a few safety tips to keep visitors safe while in the downtown area, according to a press release. The police department will have a command center stationed in the vicinity of the New Albany Farmers Market, located at the intersection Bank and East Market streets. The New Albany Fire Department will also have department members stationed alongside police personnel at the command center ready to handle any emergency that may arise.

People attending the festival are urged to be safe and to keep a close watch on small children accompanying them to the event, according to NAPD Maj. Keith Whitlow in a release. Young children can become easily separated from adults in the large crowds. If someone does become separated from a child, inform a police officer immediately, or call 911 for assistance. Any lost child that is discovered at the event will be escorted to the police department’s command center.

In an effort to promote the responsible use of alcohol, NAPD Police Chief Sherri Knight will make a concerted effort to meet with owners of establishments that serve alcohol in and around the festival venue. They will be encouraged to keep an eye out for customers at their establishments that may be bordering on over-indulgence and asked to discontinue service to those individuals.
