NEW ALBANY —
In an effort to provide a safe environment for shoppers and deter potential criminals, the New Albany Police Department will be increasing patrols around local retail businesses during the holiday season.
Police officers have already begun to heighten their presence in shopping areas and providing traffic assistance when necessary. Officers will be conducting foot patrols and well as using their patrol cars to increase visibility, according to a press release.
Chief Sherri Knight with NAPD said her department has increased patrols during the holiday season for several years. The patrols will focus on the downtown area as well as local department stores.
Knight said shoppers should be alert while in stores and parking lots.
“It’s easy to get distracted while shopping during the holidays,” Knight said in the release. “To decrease your odds of becoming a victim, you should be aware of your surroundings and your belongings at all times.”
Police offer several safety tips while shopping:
• Do not leave purchased items visible in the car; put bags in the trunk.
• Keep the amount of cash you have at a minimum.
• Park in areas that have adequate lighting and have key ready before getting to your car.
