New Washington post office offers Bethlehem cancellation marks

Bethlehem post office closed after hours change, retirement of postmaster

CLARK COUNTY — For years, the Bethlehem post office has been a popular destination for Christmas card mailers. But this year, the New Washington United States Postal Service branch is the place to go to get the Bethlehem cancellation mark on holiday mailings.

Those who wish to receive the Bethlehem cancellation mark at the New Washington post office are encouraged to purchase their stamps at the New Washington location.

The Bethlehem post office has been closed for nearly four months. The location’s postmaster retired after the Bethlehem branch changed its schedule from a four-hour shift to just a two-hour shift.

Finding someone willing to work just two hours during the day has made filling the position a challenge, said Jeffersonville Postmaster Doug Caswell.

“Not too many people want to commit for ... $12-13 an hour for just two hours a day, and that’s our biggest concern,” Caswell said. “I can’t get anybody hired. Nobody will take that.”

Although the Bethlehem post office currently cannot offer services like shipping and retail sales, the location’s post-office boxes are still serviced, as well as mail pickup at the collection boxes outside, Caswell said.
