> SOUTHERN INDIANA — SOUTHERN INDIANA                                                                                                         Lane restrictions for Sherman Minton lighting maintenance

The Indiana Department of Transportation [INDOT] has announced lane restrictions on the Sherman Minton Bridge for lighting maintenance. The lane closure is not expected to impact rush hour traffic.

Beginning today, Dec. 13, crews will close a lane each day to perform lighting maintenance on the bridge. The restrictions will be daily, five days a week, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Work will begin on the upper deck of the bridge that carries Interstate-64 westbound traffic over the Ohio River. This work will have a four week completion period, weather dependant.


AARP Floyd County to meet

AARP, Floyd County Chapter, will meet at noon Friday, Dec. 14, at St. John’s Church, corner of 13th and Elm streets, New Albany.

Entertainment provided by the SilverToner's. Drawing for a door prize and 50/50 will be held. Bring a covered dish. Guests are welcomed.

Book discussion Friday at IUS

A discussion of the book “Thinking Fast and Slow” by Daniel Kahneman, will be at noon Friday, Dec. 14, at the IU Southeast Library, 4201 Grant Line Rd., New Albany.

The book was selected by the New York Times Book Review as one of the best books of 2011 and Kahneman is the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his seminal work in psychology.

‘Heartstrings’ to perform at library

Come hear Christmas music to help you feel the holiday spirit at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library.

‘Heartstrings’ will play carols on Hammered and Appalachian dulcimers, a violin and guitar.

Make homemade dog biscuits Wednesday

The New Albany-Floyd County Public Library will host a dog biscuit making class at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, in the staff lounge at the library.

The ingredients will be combined, rolled and cut out, then placed on cookie sheets to be backed at home. The recipe and instructions for baking will be provided. Bring a cookie sheet for taking the finished product home to bake.

Dinner will help Haiti relief

The Knights of Columbus, 225 E. Market St., Jeffersonville, will sponsor an all-you-can-eat chicken dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14,  at the K of C. Hall.

The menu will consist of chicken, green beans, macaroni and cheese, potatoes and gravy, slaw, drink and dessert. The cost is $8.

A large portion of the proceeds will be given to Father Tom for the Haiti Disaster Relief Fund.

Museum announces holiday hours

The holiday hours for the Howard Steamboat Museum and Mansion, 1101 East Market St., Jeffersonville, will be as follows:

Dec. 24 – Monday - Christmas Eve – Closed

Dec. 25 – Tuesday - Christmas Day – Closed

Dec. 31 – Monday - New Year’s Eve – Closed

Jan. 1. – Tuesday - New Year’s Day – Closed

Regular museum hours will be observed at all other times,  Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. Visit the museum website at for further information.

Library offers video variety

The Jeffersonville Township Public Library and Clarksville Branch now offer a variety of video game titles that library users can borrow. The libraries offer video games that can be used in Sony® PlayStation3, Microsoft® X-box 360 and Nintento® Wii gaming systems.

  Library users, with library accounts in good standing, can check out up to three video games on their library card for a period of three weeks.


Preservation group having bake sale Sunday

The Old Utica School Preservation is having a holiday bake sale from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Utica Preservation Building (old firehouse building) in Utica. There will be cakes, pies, fudge, cookies, red hots, and several other treats to have to enjoy over the holidays.

If you have any old or new pictures that you would like to share bring them with you — we will have a scanner and computer to copy or upload to the web site where many others can enjoy them also.
