Animation presented for Jeffersonville soccer complex

Vissing Park to soon open to the public

JEFFERSONVILLE — As Vissing Park nears its completion, the Jeffersonville Parks Authority Board has turned its sights to the early phases of constructing a multisports complex near Charlestown Pike.

An animation of what the soccer complex, with a multiuse indoor facility, could become was presented to the board by James Lake, architect with Kovert Hawkins. The animation included plans to construct six soccer fields, interchangeable with football fields and an indoor multipurpose facility that could host basketball, volleyball or even table tennis.

“It communicates to anybody who sees it what we can’t communicate in 122 [project] plans,” Lake said about the animation.

The design for the plans to expand the Clark County Soccer Association fields and add an indoor multipurpose facility comes with an estimated cost of $4 million. The property for the sports complex was donated to the Clark County Soccer Association by John Woehrle, said Paul Duckworth, president of CCSA. To secure the property needed for the expanded complex, a portion is expected to be donated to the parks department.

“We’re in the process of working something out so the city [of Jeffersonvile] and the parks department will own a part of it and [CCSA] will retain the other part of it,” said Parks Department Director Paul Northam.

While plans are still being devised for the project, potential funding sources are already being explored.

“This might be a perfect project to look at a revenue bond for,” said Parks Authority Board Member Dennis Julius.

He offered the parks authority should consider conducting a study to see what amount of revenue is expected to be generated by the sports complex and potentially seek a revenue bond to pay for its construction.

The animation presented is likely to be used to look for other potential funding sources, which includes requesting money from the Clark-Floyd Counties Convention and Tourism Bureau and seek private donations through sponsors.
