Former New Albany council member, longtime real estate agent dies

McCartin served on both city and county councils

NEW ALBANY — Donald E. McCartin, a former member of the New Albany City Council, Floyd County Council and Floyd County Building Authority, died Friday at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services. He was 85.

Besides being a lifelong member of the Democratic Party and involved in politics for decades, he opened McCartin Real Estate in New Albany more than 60 years ago. He was a founding member of the Southern Indiana Board of Realtors and was inducted recently into the organization’s Hall of Fame.

“I think he always had New Albany’s best interest at heart. He was not a professional politician,” said former New Albany mayor Doug England. “He just tried to make a difference in the community. He was always involved in real estate and raised a good family who have all made contributions to the community.”

Besides being involved in politics and real estate, McCartin was also a former board member at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services and was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

Realtor Pat Harrison was inducted into the Southern Indiana Board of Realtors Hall of Fame with McCartin and said he was both a friend and colleague.

“I’ve known Don a long time,” Harrison said. “He always had a great personality and was always happy. He excelled in commercial real estate and did a lot of appraisals. He was a good family man.”

Harrison said McCartin, Dick Clipp, Buzz Bauer and Wayne Marquis were known as the State Street Investors when they all began in the real estate industry.

“It’s the end of another era,” she said.

McCartin’s funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in New Albany. His visitation is from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Kraft Funeral Service, Spring Street Chapel, New Albany.
