NEWS AND TRIBUNE BRIEFS — For Dec. 1

NEW ALBANY

St. Paul’s presenting lessons, carols

St. Paul’s presents A Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols for Advent at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2. A wine and cheese reception begins at 4:30 p.m.

This service celebrates the birth of Jesus by telling the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah and the birth of Jesus in a series of short readings from the Bible. The readings are interspersed with carols, choral music and congregational singing of hymns. The format for this service originated in England in 1880 as a way of keeping men out of the pubs on Christmas Eve. Several decades later, the Dean of King’s College, Cambridge adapted this format and thus began a tradition that is now more than 90 years old. This service has now been adapted by many churches all over the world as part of their Christmas worship.

St. Paul’s is located at the corner of 11th & Market Streets in New Albany.
