NAPD in compliance with state, drops incident report fees

By MATT THACKER

The New Albany Police Department stopped charging for incident reports this week.

The police department had previously charged $3 per copy for incident reports, also called case reports. The Evening News and The Tribune first reported May 24 that Indiana’s public access counselor has ruled repeatedly that police may only charge 10 cents per page for copies.

NAPD also has increased the fee for accident reports from $5 to $8. The policies went

into effect Monday.

The state allows for a minimum of a $5 charge for accident reports and does not set a maximum amount.

The Jeffersonville and Clarksville police departments had charged $5 per incident report, while the Clark County Sheriff’s Department charged 50 cents per page. All three agencies dropped the charges within a week after the article’s publication.

Messages left for the police department’s administration were not immediately returned Thursday.
