FOOTBALL: Jeff scores first, never again in loss to No. 1 East
BY TYLER V. HOEPPNER
The Columbus Republic
COLUMBUS — A Jeffersonville onside kick, a nine-play Red Devil scoring drive and less than four minutes into the game, Columbus East trailed for the first time all season.
No matter.
Class 4A No. 1 East scored on its next possession and rattled off the next 34 points of the game, beating Jeffersonville 34-6 to claim at least a share of its fifth-straight Hoosier Hills Conference title.
Dusty Kiel had quite the senior night performance for the Olympians. He was 11-for-19 for 225 yards and three touchdowns, while running for 133 yards and two touchdowns.
Duwyce Wilson had six catches for 167 yards and two scores as the Olympians racked up 472 yards of total offense.
The 28-point margin of victory tied for the lowest of the season for East (8-0, 6-0 HHC).
“They’ve got weapons everywhere, so it’s hard to slow them down,” Jeff coach Steve Cooley said. “Kiel, Wilson and those guys have been playing together for a while. They execute so well.”
Meanwhile, Jeff’s dangerous backfield was held in check most of the night. Quarterback Edward Wright-Baker was 11-for-21 for 101 yards and an interception.
Meanwhile, running back Jamie Goldsmith, who entered as the second leading back in the state, had 19 carries for 70 yards. He scored Jeff’s lone touchdown when he took the snap from center and ran in 13 yards.
“They made us fight and scratch and claw for each yard that we got. I tell you what, their defense is really, really good,” Cooley said. “We did a nice job at times. Obviously, you’re not pleased getting beat 34-6, but we did some good things out there at times.
“We just couldn’t sustain any drives. We stalled out a couple of times where we should have put some points on the board.”
East coach Gaddis was pleased with his defense, which held the Red Devils (3-5, 2-4 HHC) out of end zone the rest of the night, including late in the fourth with the junior varsity in the game.
Jeffersonville will complete the regular season when it travels to Jennings County next Friday.
