ROUNDUP: Reich tosses no-hitter in 7-0 win over Shawe

Silver Creek girls’ tennis opens with 3-2 win over Bulldogs

CHARLESTOWN — In the first official home game at the new Charlestown baseball field, Drew Reich threw a no-hitter and shut out Madison Shawe in a 7-0 victory.

Reich (2-0) walked seven and struck out seven in the complete-game performance.

“He did a good job of battling,” Charlestown coach Ricky Romans said. “He didn’t have great command in the late innings, but any time you throw a no-hitter, it’s special. It will be a great memory for him.”

Charlestown took a 2-0 lead through two innings then put the Hilltoppers away with five runs in the fifth.

Jason Houchens went 2-for-3 with a run and two knocked in for the Pirates.

Charlestown (2-2) is off until Monday when it travels to Eastern for a Mid-Southern Conference game.

Pioneers blast Crawford: Aaron Patterson and Cristian Ensley had two hits apiece and Andrew Hunt gave up just two hits in five innings as Providence beat up on Crawford County, 11-1.

Hunt walked just one batter.

“He did a nice job on the mound,” Pioneers coach Scott Hornung said.

In Tuesday’s opener, Providence defeated Eastern 11-2 behind the pitching of Jon Davis. Tyler Simms and Austin Dickey each had doubles for the Pioneers.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Dragons get by New Albany in season opener: Kat Hebble won at No. 1 singles and Silver Creek swept the doubles event to beat New Albany 3-2 in both teams’ season opener.

Hebble beat Marin Kanii 6-3, 6-0 and the Dragons’ doubles teams of Rebekah Knittle and Jenny Block and Katy Hawkins and Kelsi Scott both won in straight sets.

“I was impressed with both our doubles,” Silver Creek coach Robert Briscoe said. “They really came out in the first match and showed that they know how to play doubles and what we expect — and it showed in the scores.”

NEXT: Silver Creek (0-1) hosts Southwestern, tonight; New Albany (0-1) at New Albany Invitational, Saturday.
