H.S. BASEBALL: It's Dragons, Pirates for Madison Sectional title

Cook leads Creek past Madison, Charlestown gets past Cougars

MADISON — While both the Charlestown and Silver Creek baseball teams let their opponents hang around through the early innings, it quickly became clear that the road to the Madison Sectional championship would run through Clark County.

Actually, the trophy won't venture far from Highway 403, which separates the two schools.

The defending champion Dragons got a dominating performance both on the mound and at the plate from junior Cameron Cook, who tossed a one-hit shutout and had three doubles in Silver Creek's 8-0 win over the tournament host Cubs in Saturday's first semifinal at Gary O'Neal Field. The Pirates took a more balanced approach, getting a two-run home run from catcher Daniel Sprinkle to help them pull away from North Harrison late in a 5-1 victory that ran deep into the evening and set up a rematch of last year's title game.

Charlestown and Silver Creek will meet for the championship of the Class 3A Madison Sectional at 6 p.m. Monday. The Dragons look to capture their second straight sectional title and advance to the regional round, while the Pirates look for their first championship this decade, last winning the tournament in 2009. The winner at Madison will play in the Jasper Regional, a four-team bracket played on June 7.

Cook was the story throughout, pitching all seven innings and surrendering just one hit and three Cub baserunners for the entire contest. The junior walked one, hit a batter and struck out nine, including two of Madison’s last three hitters.

Needing a run to truly take control, Cook decided he would handle that as well.

His chance came in the bottom of the third inning, after Brahm Whittinghill reached on the first of three Madison errors. Cook smashed a double to left field to allow Whittinghill to come all the way around from first and stake himself to a 1-0 edge.
