Borden’s Lynch wins Trester Award

Senior is first Brave to win mental attitude award

INDIANAPOLIS — Borden senior Michael Lynch earned the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award in Class A boys’ basketball following the game. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance presented a $1,000 scholarship to Borden High School in Lynch’s name for winning the honor.

The award is given at each year’s IHSAA State Finals to a senior in each state championship game who best demonstrates mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability.

“My family is trying to help me go to college and that Trester Award is going to help pay for it. It really does help,” said Lynch, who plans on attending the University of Indianapolis.

Lynch ranks sixth in the senior class at Borden and he is the senior class treasurer. He is the team captain for the Braves’ boys’ cross country and track teams and is active in his church.

Lynch also assumed a leadership role in the clean-up and building projects in Henryville for tornado victims last year.

Nash nominated Lynch for the award and he was extremely proud his senior got the honor.

“You can’t ask for a better student. You can’t ask for a better person in terms of community service, leadership and as a kid in the hallway,” Nash said. “He’s outgoing. He’s great with our Biddy Ball kids. He works his tail off academically. He’s just a great representation of what that award should mean.”

Lynch is the fourth player from the Clark-Floyd area to win the Trester Award. The other three players were New Albany’s James Henry in 1955, Jeffersonville’s Mark Inman in 1972 and Floyd Central’s Pat Graham in 1989. Graham, a Borden native, also was named Indiana Mr. Basketball in 1989.

Other notable Trester Award winners are Bobby Plump, Jimmy Rayl, Tom and Dick VanArsdale, Damon Bailey, Jared Jeffries, Greg Oden, Gordon Hayward and Cody Zeller.
