LITTLE LEAGUE: New Albany takes two weekend losses at 11-12 softball state

All-Stars need win Monday, help to advance to semis

NEW ALBANY — After opening the Little League 11-12 softball state finals at Lebanon with a big 11-1 win over Southport, New Albany dropped a couple of tough decisions over the weekend.

Now New Albany will need a win over Anderson Riverfield this afternoon and some help to advance to Tuesday’s elimination round.

“We still have a possibility,” New Albany manager Darrell Thomas said. “We have to approach it like it’s another district championship against our biggest rival [because] 2-2 could still get us in.”

On Sunday, New Albany jumped out to a 6-2 lead on Bedford before its opponent scored the game’s final six runs for an 8-6 victory.

After Bedford scored two in the first, New Albany answered to tie the game at 2-2. Then in the second, the New Albany All-Stars took a 6-2 lead with a four-run second inning.

However, Bedford brought in a new, slower pitcher and New Albany could never solve her.

“She kept us off balance,” Thomas said. “We couldn’t keep from being out in front of her. Everything was off the end of our bats.”

Anya Davenport led the New Albany offense by going 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs. Kelsey Thomas and Camri Thomas each went 2-for-4 with a run.

On Saturday, defending state runner-up South Bend South East handed New Albany its first loss of the tournament.

Brianaa Schoenfeld went 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs in the loss. Camri Thomas and Erin Bell also went 2-for-4. Thomas knocked in three runs and Bell added an RBI for New Albany.

Schoenfeld also pitched a complete game.

“She pitched a great game and she helped herself with the bat and on the base paths,” Coach Thomas said of Schoenfeld.
