LITTLE LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Jeff/GRC 9-10s roll past C’town to improve to 2-0

New Albany 9-10s cruise to win over Clarksville


NEW ALBANY — The Jeff/GRC 9-10-year-old Baseball All-Stars remained undefeated in the District 5 Little League Tournament on Sunday at Mount Tabor Park, defeating Charlestown in four innings 13-0.

Nolan Siler led the Jeff/GRC offense, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Teammate Gavin Galligan also went 2-for-2 along with an RBI.

Also for Jeff/GRC, Stevie Kendrick was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Eric Wigginton scored three runs.

Jeff/GRC pitchers Jaylen Fairman and Eli Watson combined to throw a two-hit shutout, striking out eight Charlestown batters. Jeff/GRC scored six runs in the first inning, five in the second and two in the third.

District 5 Tournament play in all divisions resumed Sunday after being postponed on Friday and Saturday because of rain and wet field conditions.

• New Albany stays undefeated: New Albany improved to 2-0 in the District 5 Tournament with a 20-1 triumph over Clarksville in four innings on Sunday.

New Albany’s Josh Castleman and Austin Oppel each smacked a grand slam. They combined to drive in 14 of New Albany’s 20 runs.

On the mound, Castleman and teammate Tucker Biven combined to give up three hits.

• New Albany clinches berth in title game: New Albany secured a berth in the division championship game with a 12-0 victory in four innings over Charlestown on Sunday at Grant Line Elementary School.

New Albany’s Kelsey Adams and Erin Bell each went 2-for-3. Teammates Bre Schoenfeld and Alexis Williams combined to pitch a three-hit shutout. In her stint, Williams threw two scoreless innings.

• New Albany edges HYR: Trailing 3-2, New Albany rallied with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and two in the fifth to defeat HYR on Sunday at Mount Tabor Park, 5-4. HYR scored a run in top of the sixth to pull within one run, but it left a runner stranded at third at the end of the game.

New Albany pitchers Levi Baxter and Tyler Green combined for the victory, allowing six hits altogether.

HYR’s Josh Archer smacked a home run.

• Creek evens tourney record: Silver Creek moved back to the .500 mark in the District 5 Tournament by beating Clarksville on Sunday, 7-3.

Creek’s Kyle Snell and Caleb Popp each went 3-for-3 and combined for seven RBIs. Clarksville collected only three hits and scored three unearned runs.

• Silver Creek moves to 2-0: Josh Landers drilled two homers and had five RBIs in Silver Creek’s 15-3 win over HYR on Sunday. Teammates Conner Groher and Tyler Kapust each smacked a homer of their own.

HYR’s Jalen Poates was 3-for-3 with an RBI.

• New Albany blanks Clarksville: New Albany pitchers Skylar Roark and Maggie Jo Foreman combined to throw a two-hit shutout in a 10-0 win in four innings over Clarksville on Sunday at Grant Line Elementary.

New Albany defense backed up its pitchers by turning two double plays. Roark helped herself at the plate with two hits.

NEXT: New Albany (2-0) vs. Jeff/GRC, 5:30 p.m., today; Clarksville vs. Jeff/GRC, 5:30 p.m., Wednesday.

• Jeff/GRC takes care of Creek: On Sunday, Jeff/GRC kept its undefeated record intact with a 16-0 victory over Silver Creek. Jeff/GRC’s Kayla Ellis and Raegan Jones each came home three times.
