Godfrey strong in pro debut

NA grad 2-for-2 with two doubles in Danville's 8-4 win

KINGSPORT, Tenn. — New Albany graduate Sean Godfrey went 2-for-2 with two doubles in his professional debut in an 8-4 victory over Kingsport (Tenn.) for the Danville (Va.) Braves in the Appalachian Rookie League opener Thursday night.

Godfrey played left field and batted in the sixth spot. In his first pro at-bat, he drilled a one-out, two-RBI double over Mets’ rightfielder Wuilmer Cecerra’s head to plate the game’s first two runs.

“I was smiling from ear-to-ear on second base,” Godfrey said.

In the fourth, he hit a two-out double and later scored on a Bryan De La Rosa single.

“It was a pretty exciting night,” the recent Ball State graduate said. “I had a good time.”

Danville is in Kingsport through Saturday before going to Johnson City, Tenn., Sunday through Tuesday. Godfrey and the Braves are home for the first time at Legion Field against Greeneville (S.C.) on June 25.
