COLUMBUS — Saturday’s girls’ Hoosier Hills Conference meet was dominated by Floyd Central and Jeffersonville. The two teams nearly outscored the rest of the six participants combined.

In the end, it was the Highlanders who edged Jeff 311-306 for their third consecutive HHC title.

“We had a great day,” Floyd coach Joe Perkins said. “Very proud of the effort that our girls put in today.”

The difference was the Highlanders’ elite swimmers. Meg Taylor won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 freestyle, Maryn Meldrum won the 100 breaststroke and was second in the 100 butterfly, Amy McCormick won the 500 free and was runner-up in the 200 free and the trio combined with Jessica Ingram to win the 200 free relay — to set the conference record 1:41.51 — and with Layah Jones to win the 400 free relay.

Jones was second in the 200 individual medley and the 200 backstroke.

In all, the Highlanders had five champions, five runners-up and a pair of third-place finishes to hold off the Red Devils.

“Our whole team rose to the occasion today,” Perkins said.

The Highlanders got a valuable performance from its divers. Sydney Baumann finished second — the second-best performance of her career — and Caitlin Davenport was seventh on the 1-meter springboard.

“Sydney Baumann did a fantastic job diving today,” Perkins said.

Jeffersonville opened the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay behind Karlee Demsey, Samantha Glover, Yanna Martin and Jacqueline Richard. The Devils didn’t get another champion until the third-to-late event when Demsey took the 100 backstroke crown.

However, Jeff stayed with the Highlanders based on superior depth. Adeline Dixon was second in the 500 free and third in the 200 IM, Glover was the runner-up in the breaststroke and fourth in the IM, Blankenbeker managed a third in the 200 free and fourth in the 500 free, Amber Leininger was third in the 500 and fourth in the 200, Kali Crace touched the wall fourth in the backstroke and sixth in the butterfly, Martin came in fifth in the butterfly and sixth in the breaststroke and the Red Devils had a pair of fourth place finishes from Erica Romans in diving and Demsey in the butterfly.

After challenging for championships the past four seasons, New Albany finished sixth as a team on Saturday. However, the Bulldogs did have some strong individual performances.

Sophomore Regan Thom was one of the stars of the day with championships in the 200 IM in 2:15.21 and the 100 butterfly in 59.22. Junior Alexis Lete gave the Bulldogs a third individual title in the 50 free in 25.48. She was also second to Taylor in the 100 freestyle.

Also for the Bulldogs, Emma Reas finished fifth in the diving competition.

The Highlanders have now beaten the Red Devils twice this season — by a combined 16 points. The two will meet again as the settle the sectional championship on Feb. 8.
