H.S. BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Astle wins 20th in 8-1 win over BNL

Pirates sweep Switzerland County, go to 12-2; Floyd stays unbeaten with a pair of one-run wins

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Trent Astle won his 20th game at Jeffersonville, leading the Red Devils to an 8-1 victory over Bedford North Lawrence on Saturday.

Astle surrendered just one run on three hits in his complete-game performance. Astle, who struck out 14 Stars, joins Joe Greg Wright (29), Hunter Tipton (23), Walt Terrell (23), Adam Treat (22) and Keith Emly (20) as 20-game winners for the Red Devils.

Drew Ellis went 1 for 2 and scored twice to increase his hitting streak to 10 games. Astle also doubled in the win.

NEXT: Jeff (7-3) hosts North Harrison, Tuesday.

• Pirates sweep Switzerland County, go to 12-2: Charlestown swept a doubleheader from Switzerland County — by a combined 20-1 — to improve to 12-2 on the season.

“I’m happy with where we are, obviously,” Pirates coach Ricky Romans said.

Charlestown beat the Pacers 6-0 in the opener. Colin Martin got his second win, giving up just two hits in a complete-game shutout. Tyler Willinger and Tanner West both went 2 for 3. Willinger knocked in a pair of runs and West scored twice.

In the second game, Ryan Jones went 2 for 2 with a pair of triples, three runs scored and two RBIs. Jordan Hensley-Cole went the distance for his first win of the season.

“Both Colin Martin and Jordan threw the ball well today,” Romans said.

The Pirates host Corydon Central today in a makeup game. Both teams are 3-0 in the Mid-Southern Conference entering the contest.

• Highlanders stay unbeaten with two one-run wins: Floyd Central earned a pair of 3-2 wins over Evansville Harrison and North Posey on Saturday to improve to 14-0 for the season.

The Highlanders scored a run in the bottom of the seventh in both contests.

Against Evansville Harrison, Derek DeSpain singled to open the seventh. He later scored when the Warriors committed an error trying to double up Ross Lundy for the final out of the inning.

DeSpain went 2 for 4 with a double.

In the win over North Posey, Trey Fulton hit a walk-off single that scored Michael Springer, who had singled, with the bases loaded.

Garrett Ruttle threw three innings and earned the victory in relief.

NEXT: Floyd Central (14-0) at St. Xavier (Ky.), Tuesday.

• Borden opens SAC PLAY with a win over Lanesville: After a disappointing 2-4 start that included three one-run losses, Borden opened Southern Athletic Conference play with a 3-2 victory over Lanesville on Saturday.

Kyle Kruer gave up two runs in the first inning — without a Lanesville base hit — and shut down the Eagles the rest of the way.

Kruer struck out nine batters and gave up six hits. He also had a double.

Josh Vollstedt went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and an RBI.

The Braves trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth. Garrett Vick started a fourth-inning rally with a single and a stolen base. After Vick scored to tie the game, Jonathan Knight drove in pinch runner Caleb Hart with the game-winning run.

NEXT: Borden hosts Rock Creek, today.

• Musketeers take two: Eastern swept Paoli in a doubleheader on Saturday, taking the opener 10-6 and the nightcap 11-2.

Shane Williams went 3 for 4 with a double, three runs batted in and a run in the victory. Kaleb Nicholson struck out 15 Rams.

In Game 2, Williams allowed just one run on three hits and struck out nine.
