COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Grenadiers push Winning streak to 10

IU Souteast sweeps Point Park, 5-3 and 5-2

NEW ALBANY — The IU Southeast softball team used solid pitching and timely hitting to sweep Point Park University on Friday afternoon.

Bethany Sullivan (6-0) continued her dominant start to the season by picking up her sixth win with a 5-3 decision in game one.  She went all seven innings, surrendering three runs but only one earned and struck out three.

The game was tied in the bottom of the fifth inning when Katie Jelinek put down a bunt to move Whitney Estes over from first after she singled. The ball was thrown into right field by third baseman Danielle Dorunda and Estes came around to score. Catcher Sara Guffey threw the ball into center field trying to cut down Jelinek as she advanced from first to second. She came around to score and Sullivan was able to cruise the rest of the en route to a 5-3 win.

Estes went 3 for 3 in Game 1 and Brookelyn Visker, Summer Sanders and Megan Sutherland each had two hits and scored one run apiece. Visker hit her second home run of the season on a solo blast to left in the third inning.

In Game 2, the Grenadiers (12-4, 6-0 KIAC) roared back from a 2-1 deficit by scoring four straight runs to take a 5-2 lead.

Jelinek singled to score Visker in the third inning to tie the game. Megan Sutherland scored on Jade Detzer's double in the bottom of the fourth. Detzer would score on Visker's single one batter later.

Errors would end up costing the Pioneers once again in the fifth inning. After Whitney Estes doubled, she advanced to third on a passed ball and scored after the catcher, Lauren Fevola, threw the ball into left field as Estes advanced on the play.

The Pioneers (6-6, 0-2 KIAC) scratched across two runs in the top of the sixth before Jenna Swain entered and ended the threat by striking out two.

Amber Eckstein (3-1) picked up her third win of the season in five and one-third innings of work and Swain got her second save of the season.

IU Southeast hosts Ohio Christian Saturday at 1 p.m.
