YOUTH BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL: New life for Billy Herman Ballpark

Youth baseball, softball tournaments scheduled

NEW ALBANY — Nine youth baseball and softball tournaments will be played this spring at Billy Herman Ballpark, as the facility will host competitive play for the first time in almost 10 years.

The New Albany Parks Department announced Thursday that fencing along the fields have been repaired, and that the batting cage at Billy Herman Park, which is located off Scribner Drive, is being fixed.

Six girls fast-pitch softball tournaments and three boys baseball tournaments have been slated for this spring.

“The tournaments will not only benefit the parks and recreation department, but will benefit local businesses in the downtown, such as restaurants and hotels,” Mayor Jeff Gahan stated in a news release.

Though New Albany Little League chose to partner with Floyd County to build a new facility off Charlestown Road, Gahan said the organization will still be allowed to use Billy Herman Ballpark for practices or additional games.

Additionally, the Griffin Recreation Center, Fairmont Park, Sertoma Park, and Joe Kraft Park have restored backstops where teams can practice.

“It is our hope that more people in the community will familiarize themselves with our city parks and inquire about their usage,” Parks Director Alicia Meredith said.
