BOYS’ SWIMMING: Martin has state titles in sight

Jeff senior in two individual finals today; Shive makes finals in 100 backstroke

INDIANAPOLIS — Jeffersonville senior Timothy “T” Martin will swim for a pair of individual boys’ swimming state titles today after two strong performances in Friday’s IHSAA state finals preliminaries at IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Martin finished third in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle on Friday.

He swam a 20.89 in the 50 free, only behind Zionsville junior Kyle DeCoursey’s 20.65 and Penn junior Mate Kovacs’s 20.71. Martin finished third in the 50 freestyle as a junior.

In the 100 free, Martin’s 45.25 was only behind Chesteron’s Blake Pieroni, who set a state record with a 43.52, and DeCoursey’s 44.69.

Martin’s teammate Evan Shive will also swim for a state title in the 100 backstroke. Shive’s 51.50 was good enough for the seventh seed heading into today’s final. Shive finished eighth in the state in the backstroke a year ago as a sophomore.

Jeff’s 400 freestyle relay team of Martin, Tyler Sariscsany, Zach Griffis and Shive will return Saturday in the state consolation heat after posting the state’s 10th-best time on Friday with a 3:09.74.

Floyd Central had a relay and an individual advance to today’s state consolation swim. Senior Colin Lyell placed 12th on Friday with a 21.57 in the 50 free. The Highlanders’ 200 free relay team of Lyell, Eli Anderson, Noble Guyon and Nathan Manias will be seeded 11th in today’s consolation heat. Both could finish as high as ninth today.

Sariscsany finished 29th in the 50 free and 26th in the 100 free, Anderson was 23rd in the 200 free and 31st in the 100 back and Floyd’s Marc McCormick finished 26th in the 500 freestyle. Floyd’s 200 medley relay team placed 27th and its 400 free relay team was 24th.

Pieroni’s record in the 100 free was one of four set by Chesteron on Friday. The Trojans’ 200 medley relay team set the record in 1:30.65, senior Aaron Whitaker swam an all-time state best 46.61 in the 100 butterfly and their 400 free relay team set a mark of 2:59.36.

Columbus North’s Cody Taylor also set a state record in the 100 breaststroke in 54.56.
