H.S. ROUNDUP: Nzombi’s hat trick leads Rock Creek to 13-0 victory

Jeff volleyball beats Charlestown for first win

SELLERSBURG — The Rock Creek Academy boys’ soccer team rolled to a 13-0 home victory over Henryville on Thursday in the season opener for both teams.

Gedeon Nzombi led the Lions with a hat trick, kicking in three goals along with dishing out an assist. Nzombi’s goals happened in the fourth, 10th and 16th minutes of the match. Teammate Blake Joseph kicked in two goals, while Rock Creek’s Ronald Karenzi, Will Brown and Trenton Dethy each had a goal and an assist.

Also scoring for the Lions were Dakota Evans, Jeremiah Wilkinson, Brandon Hanson, Reggie Bailey and Immanual Malumba.

“It was a good game for these guys to play different positions,” Rock Creek coach Chris Brown said.

• Silver Creek defeats Warriors: Host Silver Creek edged Christian Academy in its season opener on Thursday, 3-2.

After the Warriors’ Nick Reed kicked in an unassisted goal in the 50th minute of the match to tie the score at two, the Dragons’ Alan Cruz responded about a minute later with the eventual game-winning goal.

Silver Creek took an early 1-0 lead in the 30th minute thanks to a goal by Noah Spencer. CAI’s Garrett Couch answered 10 minutes later with a score off a direct free kick to deadlock the match. Silver Creek took a 2-1 lead when Caleb Scarbrough converted a penalty kick in the 45th minute.

“It feels great to get off to a good start,” Dragons’ coach Colin Bell said. “We saw some things that the team needs to focus on in the upcoming practices, but I cannot be upset about getting the win.”

Creek goalkeeper John Osterhoudt made five saves, while Warrior goal Lucas Young had three.

“It seemed we didn’t get out of first gear tonight,” CAI coach Wil Lorigan said. “We’re disappointed, but we found some positives out of it.”
