HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Brownstown knocks off Charlestown, 40-26

Pirates outscore Braves 20-10 in second half

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — After Charlestown got on the scoreboard first Friday night at Blevins Field in Brownstown, but the Braves scored 30 straight points for a 30-6 halftime lead.

The Pirates responded in the second half by outscoring the Braves 20-10 in the second half, but Brownstown finished off a 40-26 victory and title of frontrunner in the Mid-Southern Conference.

Charlestown trailed 33-6 when Darren Taylor returned a fumble 16 yards to Brownstown lead to 33-12. Tristan Chester found Taylor for an 18-yard touchdown strike early in the fourth quarter and the Pirates had cut the cap to 33-20.

After Brownstown scored to put the game away, Chester threw his second touchdown, this one 75 yards to Matt Myers.

“We played well,” Charlestown coach Jason Hawkins said of Friday’s second half in an interview with Charlestown Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting. “We didn’t quit. We wanted our kids to play for four quarters and we did that.”

Myers opened the contest with a 29-yard first-quarter touchdown run. He led the Pirates with 102 yards on five carries. Cameron Hopson added 61 on five carries. Chester completed four of his 12 pass attempts for 35 yards.

The Pirates could see the Braves again. Ater losing to the Pirates 62-10 in last year’s sectional championship, Brownstown takes the lead as 2013 sectional favorites. However, Hawkins believes his team may see the Braves again.

Brownstown finished the contest with 284 yards to 271 for the Pirates.

“I don’t think they’re that much better than us,” he said. “If we keep playing hard and getting better, we’ll be OK. We’re going to be fine.”

Charlestown is 0-2 for the second time in three years. After dropping their first two games in 2011, the Pirates won their next eight before falling in the sectional championship to Corydon Central.

The Pirates will try to get in the winning column next Friday at Clarksville.
