CHARLESTOWN — Freshman Leah Sherrill scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Charlestown softball team a 1-0 home victory over Greater Clark rival New Washington on Wednesday.

Sherrill pitch-ran for teammate Shelby Goedeker, who led off the seventh by drawing a walk from Mustangs’ starting pitcher Whitney Morris. Sherrill advanced to second base on a wild pitch.

Later in the frame with Sherrill at third, the Pirate rookie scored on another Morris wild pitch with one out for the game-winner.

“We’re fortunate to get the win. Having a little speed on the bases helps,” Charlestown coach Kevin Zollman said. “Whitney Morris pitched a really good game. But she got a little rattled when runners got on.”

Despite the loss, Morris pitched a gem. She threw a complete game, allowing one hit and two walks with six strikeouts.

Pirate senior Alli Webster tossed her second consecutive no-hitter and her fourth hitless effort in five games. She struck out 14 Mustangs and walked one. On Tuesday in the completion of a suspended game at Scottsburg, Webster finished a no-hitter in a 9-0 victory with 20 strikeouts.

Webster also had the game’s only hit on Wednesday, which was a one-out single in the bottom of the first.

“She’s pitching well right now. We just hope we bring the sticks with us when she’s pitching,” Zollman said.

Charlestown (11-2) travels to Brownstown Central today for a crucial Mid-Southern Conference contest. New Washington (8-8) visit South Central today.

• Dragons top Pioneers: Host Silver Creek pounded out 11 hits in its 12-6 victory over Providence on Wednesday. The Dragons’ Shayla Cravens was the winning pitcher improving her record to 7-2.

NEXT: Silver Creek hosts Scottsburg, today; Providence (13-7) at Mustang Invitational in Edgewood, Saturday.
