HHC ROUNDUP: FC tennis repeats as HHC champs

Highlanders defeat Columbus East in title match, 4-1

COLUMBUS — The Floyd Central High School girls’ tennis team repeated as Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament champions on Monday with a 4-1 victory at Columbus East in the tournament final. The championship match was postponed last Friday because of rain.

The Highlanders got a huge lift from sophomore Haley Rose in defeating the Olympians. Rose stepped up for an ill Whitney Batliner at No. 1 doubles and teamed up with Dana Frank to beat the Columbus East tandem of Lauren Champion and Alexa Miller, 7-6(7-1), 3-6 (10-7).

“She played with a lot of heart to help us come back and win that match,” Floyd Central coach Rick Miller said about Rose.

The Highlander pair of Katherine Dauby and Erin Patterson won at two doubles over Amanda Hoshimoto and Amanda Sun, 6-3, 6-0.

At No. 1 singles, Floyd Central senior Olivia Boesing beat Ashlee Hasson, 6-0, 6-4. Highlander freshman Alex Jamison prevailed at three singles over Risa Minero, 6-2, 6-4.

Coach Miller thinks the HHC Tournament title will give Floyd Central some momentum heading into the postseason, which starts this week with the Highlanders hosting their own sectional.

“We’re extremely happy,” he said. “We didn’t want to lose going into the sectional, regional and semistate. We had some mental lapses today, but we overcame those.”

NEXT: Floyd Central (13-4) vs. Eastern, Floyd Central Sectional first round, Wednesday.

• Red Devils down Seymour: Host Jeffersonville edged Seymour to win the HHC Tournament third-place match on Monday, 3-2. The Red Devils swept both doubles matches, and Jeff’s Morgan Reilly won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

NEXT: Jeff at Silver Creek, today.

SOFTBALL

• Highlanders claim third place in Hoosier Hills: Taylor Batliner scored a second-inning run on an error to give host Floyd Central a 1-0 home win over Seymour in the third-place game of the HHC Tournament on Monday. The Highlanders’ Caroline Cato, Morgan Harper and Kassie King combined to throw a two-hit shutout.

NEXT: Floyd Central (18-4) will host Corydon Central, Wednesday.
