H.S. ROUNDUP: No. 1 Floyd goes 1-1, Jeff loses pair of one-run games

Pirates fall short in Charlestown Softball Invitational

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — In a split doubleheader in Bloomington, top-ranked Floyd Central went 1-1 and Class 4A No. 8 Jeffersonville dropped two one-run decisions against Bloomington North and Bloomington South on Saturday.

The Highlanders held a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth in their opener against No. 7 North before the Cougars scored six times in the fifth and twice in the seventh. The loss was the second of the season for Floyd and Kyle Sipes (8-2). Jacob Snodgrass hit a double for the Highlanders’ only extra-base hit.

Meanwhile, Bloomington South needed 12 innings to beat Jeffersonville 7-6. Jeff led 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh before the Panthers scored three times to send the game into extra innings. After five and a half scoreless innings, South scored the game-winning run in the 12th. Jeff had 16 hits, including a Nick Gallagher double.

In the second round, Kyle Beach improved to 7-0 by beating South 1-0. At North, Jeff couldn’t hold on to a lead for the second straight game. The Devils, who had just two hits, led 2-0 in the middle of the fifth before the Panthers scored three times in their half of the fifth to take the lead for good.

Trent Astle hit a double and Gallagher hit a solo home run in the loss.

The 1-0 win was the Highlanders’ regular-season finale. They will face New Albany for the third time this season in the opening round of the Bedford North Lawrence Sectional on Thursday. Floyd is 2-0 against their rivals.

Jeff hosts a Scottsburg and goes to Silver Creek in a split doubleheader Monday. The Devils have beaten the Warriors 14 straight times. Creek beat the Devils 3-2 last week. The game was a late addition to help make up for rainouts this season. It will be the first time since 1997 that the Devils and Dragons have met twice in a season.
