SOUTH BEND —
Zionsville broke a 0-0 tie after two innings with four runs in the third. It added four more in the fourth and beat Jeff/GRC 9-3 for the state championship at South Bend on Saturday.
After booming the ball throughout the tournament, Jeff got just five hits and committed nine errors in the state championship loss.
“We had about eight too many errors and did not hit the ball,” Jeff manager Jason Schuur said. “We locked up, but we intend to be back next year with 80 percent of the team returning as 14s.”
GRC opened play Saturday with an 11-1 win over Rush County to reach the state championship game. Jeff scored 11 runs on 12 hits and led 7-0 after three innings.
Jennah Tincher had four hits, including a double, and knocked in four runs in the victory.
Jeff finished the tournament 4-1 after securing the District 5 title two weeks earlier.
“[I want to] thank all our supporters and fans, along with a big shoutout to how proud we are of the Jeff girls finishing second in the state of Indiana,” Schuur said.
