H.S. FOOTBALL: Charlestown beats Mitchell 82-0 on record-breaking night

CHARLESTOWN — With their starters staying on the sidelines for the entire second half, the Class 3A No. 3 Charlestown Pirates showed they were ready for prime time in an 82-0 win over Mitchell in their Sectional 23 opener.

The Charlestown reserves hung 34 points on the board in the second half to turn a 49-0 halftime lead into the Pirates’ largest victory in school history.

It was the fourth shutout for the Pirates this season.  More importantly, it was their fourth in the last five games.

“Our defense did a great job — as they have all year,” said Charlestown coach Jason Hawkins. “We were flying all over the field and to the football. I can’t say enough about them.”

Mentally, Charlestown (10-0) may have it’s most difficult task upcoming. Beat someone for the second time this season. Next for the Pirates will be either Corydon Central, a team the Pirates handled earlier this season including a 47-0 thumping. Brownstown Central — a 27-24 winner over Heritage Hills on Friday — who the Pirates thumped 41-3 in Week 2, along with Salem, are also possible sectional opponents.

“We’ll come out as usual for practice,” Hawkins said. “We’ll work hard, try to get better and be ready.”

Mitchell (2-8) obviously posed little threat. For Aaron Daniel, Seth McCutcheon and Tyler Odle — the normal Pirate offensive threats it was business as usual.

McCutcheon scored on a 5-yard touchdown run on the Pirates first series. After Daniel threw a rare interception, he came back after the defense held the Blue Jackets to a four and out to throw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Odle. Daniel scored on a 13-yard run early in the second quarter. McCutcheon added touchdown runs of 16 and 46 yards. Daniel threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Wesley Sexton before again finding Odle, this time from 37 yards out.

Take away Daniel’s interception, which came on the first play of the Pirates second series, here’s what’s left: On eight possessions, Charlestown scored four times on less than two plays. Mitchell had 10 possessions in the first half. Only two lasted more than four plays.

And if anyone, anywhere, for any reason whatsoever, had any doubt as to the outcome, Odle returned the second  half kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.

Mitchell came close to the end zone just once. Charlestown led 14-0 as Mitchell’s Devon Cobb broke loose for a 53-yard gain to the Charlestown 10, failing to reach paydirt only due to a touchdown-saving tackle by Desmond Wiley. The Pirates defense then rose to the occasion. After two running plays gained only three yards, two incomplete passes turned the ball over on downs.

Daniel completed 6-of-10 passes for 127 yards with the one interception and three touchdowns. He also gained 60 yards rushing on four carries. McCutcheon rushed 7 times for 93 yards and Odle caught three passes for 100 yards.

“Seth ran the ball great tonight,” Hawkins said.

Mitchell quarterback Lucas Jakub had a rough night of it completing 1-of-9 passes for 3 yards.
