H.S. ROUNDUP: New Washington sweeps South Central, wins SAC

New Albany beats Heritage Hills on Senior Night

NEW WASHINGTON — The New Washington volleyball team claimed the outright Southern Athletic Conference title on Thursday, beating South Central in straight sets, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19. This was New Washington’s first conference title since 2008 and the 18th in its school’s history.  

The Mustangs (16-8, 5-0 SAC) continued their dominant play as they have all season long by getting a great performance out of Caroline Ricks.

Ricks placed her stamp on the match with 14 kills, nine digs and four blocks. Courtney Amick led New Washington in the assist category with 13 assists. Teammate Brianne Cochran also contributed in the win with seven service aces.

The Mustangs will prepare in the first round of Class A Christian Academy Sectional as they play Lanesville on Tuesday.

At New Washington

NEW ALBANY 3, HERITAGE HILLS 0

At New Albany

  Set scores: 25-19, 26-24, 25-21.

  NA highlights: Alexis Lete 19 kills, 2 blocks; Brook McCoy 10 kills, 11 digs; Audrey Donastorg 12 kills, 9 digs; Madison Dibble 12 digs; Madison Almon 12 digs; Sadie Meyer 24 assists.

  New Albany coach John Breeding, “We played really well, our two seniors [Olivia Balmer, Kelsey Guess] played really well. It was a great team win. We are playing good at sectional time and that is a good thing.”

  Records: New Albany 13-18.

   Notes: It was New Albany’s Senior Night.

  Next: New Albany vs. Bedford North Lawrence (Class 4A Floyd Central Sectional first round), next Thursday.

 

CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 3, SOUTHWESTERN 0

At Hanover

  Set scores: 25- 20, 25-16, 25-14.

  CAI highlights: Krista Boesing 12 kills, 2 blocks, 2 aces; Sierra Rayzor 8 kills, 6 aces, 3 blocks; Emily Haworth 8 kills, 1 block; Alex Falcone 26 assists, 11 digs, 2 aces; Hannah Staggers 6 digs, 3 aces.

  CAI coach Walter Pauly, “Tonight was a good win to end the regular season. It was truly a team effort and many contributed. We got off to a slow start but picked up momentum. Southwestern played hard and dug a lot of balls. We have a lot of work to do to prepare for sectionals.”

  Records: Christian Academy 24-6.

  JV: CAI won 2-0.

   Notes: Tonight was Christian Academy’s Senior Night. “We honored our five seniors — Hannah Staggers, Ezra Staggers, Morgan Jenkins, Rachel Jones and Emily Haworth. These ladies have played an integral role in the building and success of our program. Four of them have played at CAI starting in middle school. More importantly, they are fine young women both on and off the court and will be sorely missed” Pauly said.
