NAYBL openings still available

The New Albany Youth Basketball League has openings for fifth- and sixth-grade levels. Any boy wanting to sign up can do so on Sunday, Nov. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the New Albany High School gymnasium.

All-SAC team announced

Five Clark County high school players have been named to the all-Southern Athletic Conference team for the 2012 season.

Making the team was Leslie Beatty from Borden, Ashley Johnson and Caroline Ricks from New Washington and Jasmine Harrell and Courtney Rappe from Henryville.

Ricks share the SAC most outstanding player award with Crothersville’s Chandler Nehrt. The SAC Coach of the Year award went to Brittney Gayhart from Lanesville.

New Albany season tickets on sale

Season tickets for the New Albany girls’ basketball games will be on sale during the team’s first home game on Friday, Nov. 16 against Providence. The junior varsity game will tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for adults 60 and older and $15 for students.



Blue/White game this Saturday

The Silver Creek High school girls’ basketball will hold its third annual Blue/White game on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Admission is free and their will be games and prizes.

Silver Creek Little League elections

Officer elections for Silver Creek Little League will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The elections will be take place in the presentation room of Silver Creek Elementary School at 7:15 p.m.

Anyone living within the Silver Creek boundary is eligible and encouraged to participate. All positions are open. For further information, contact Bryan Bays at 812-697-1786.

Wendy’s High School Heisman state finalists announced

The state finalists for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award have been announced.

Twenty males and females from the state are competing to be a state winner and will go on to nationals. Those finalists from the area include New Albany High School cross country runner Phoebe Bauer, Mary-Elizabeth Tucker from Providence High School and Charlestown senior football player Aaron Daniel.

One male and one female from each state will be announced on Monday and among all the state winners, 12 will be chosen as national finalists.

The national finalists will be announced on Dec. 7 in New York City and will receive $2,000 for their school and gold medals. One male and one female will be named a national winner and recognized at the Heisman Trophy broadcast on ESPN on Dec. 8. Each winner will also receive a crystal trophy, a $500 Wendy’s gift certificate and Wendy’s will donate $10,000 to each winner’s high school.

Forty-five thousand high school seniors applied and 1,466 applicants are from Indiana. The Wendy’s Heisman Award honors top scholar-athletes and their hard work and dedication through their outstanding accomplishments in athletics, academics and community/school leadership. In its 19th year, the Wendy’s Heisman Award is the most esteemed awards at the high school level.



>>INDOOR FOOTBALL

Kentucky Xtreme signs former Kentucky Wildcat

The Kentucky Xtreme of the Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) signed former University of Kentucky tight end and fullback Maurice Grinter.

Most recently, Grinter played linebacker for the Bloomington Edge of the Indoor Football League.

During his four years of eligibility at Kentucky, the Louisville native had 31 receptions for 363 yards and five touchdowns. The 6-foot-3, 253-pound Grinter ran the ball 10 times for 36 yards and two touchdowns, playing in a total of 45 games, including four bowl games.

Grinter also played for Fairdale High School in Louisville, where he was a four-year starter. He rushed for 1,467 yards and scored 15 touchdowns as a senior.

The Xtreme’s first game will be Sunday, Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. at Freedom Hall in Louisville.
